Abstract: This case study focuses on the migration of a traditional Quantum SL500 tape-based backup system to a Commvault-based tape-free backup solution. Organizations are increasingly shifting away from tape backups due to the inefficiencies, high maintenance costs, and slower recovery times associated with physical media. Commvault, a leader in data protection and backup solutions, provides an enterprise-grade tape-free backup system that eliminates the need for physical media by utilizing disk-based storage, cloud solutions, and modern backup technologies. The migration process detailed in this case study highlights the challenges and benefits involved in moving from a tape-based solution to a more modern, scalable, and cost-effective backup system. Key factors such as data migration, system integration, and backup and recovery performance are discussed. This transition not only resulted in improved backup efficiency and faster recovery times but also led to cost reductions and better data management capabilities for the organization. The study explores the critical role of Commvault’s software suite in enabling businesses to modernize their backup infrastructure, improve data protection, and align with the demands of digital transformation.
