Abstract- -Background: Organ donation is defined as the removal of tissues from the body, from living or dead persons, for transplantation as a treatment. Organ transplantation is esteemed as the major treatment protocol for many end -stage organ diseases.
Objectives: To assess the knowledge and attitude of organ donation among the adult population of rural Telangana.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a pre-designed semi-structured-based questionnaire among an appropriately selected sample i.e. all the adults above 18 years of age. The questionnaire includes socio demographic variables and questions on knowledge and attitude toward organ donation. The data was analyzed using Microsoft Excel and frequencies and percentages were calculated, and associations were measured using the Chi- square test.
Results: A total of 100 participants were included in the study. The Majority (41%) of them were in the age group of 26-44 years. About 50% were males and 50% were females. Most of them have completed their secondary education (26%). Most were Hindus (73%), 18% were Muslims and 9% were Christians. 74% of the participants were aware of the term organ donation. About half of the sample size felt organ donation could be done after death, 44% of them were about live organ donation. Among the study population, the major source of information was friends and colleagues. A greater part of the study population had a positive attitude towards organ donation.
Conclusion: This study came to an end with most participants having a moderate level of knowledge and positive attitude towards organ donation. Besides noting the awareness and attitude towards organ donation, this study helps to address the lack of knowledge about the legal aspects of organ donation and helps to spread awareness using appropriate measures about organ donation for the future betterment of society.
